The Ultimate List of Resume Action Verbs (By Category)

Weak verbs kill strong resumes. Replace "responsible for" and "helped with" with powerful action verbs that show impact — organized by job function.

The words you use to describe your experience matter more than you think. 'Responsible for managing a team' is passive and forgettable. 'Led a team of 8 engineers to deliver a platform serving 500K users' is compelling. The difference is a strong action verb — and it affects both how recruiters perceive you and how ATS systems score your resume.

Why Action Verbs Matter

  • They signal ownership and impact rather than passive involvement
  • They make your bullet points more concise and scannable
  • Strong verbs associated with leadership and achievement are weighted positively by ATS algorithms
  • They help recruiters visualize what you actually did

Leadership & Management

  • Led, Directed, Managed, Supervised, Oversaw, Spearheaded
  • Coached, Mentored, Developed, Trained, Empowered
  • Established, Founded, Launched, Initiated, Pioneered
  • Delegated, Coordinated, Orchestrated, Mobilized

Achievement & Impact

  • Achieved, Exceeded, Surpassed, Outperformed, Delivered
  • Increased, Grew, Expanded, Accelerated, Boosted
  • Reduced, Decreased, Cut, Minimized, Streamlined
  • Generated, Produced, Drove, Yielded

Analysis & Strategy

  • Analyzed, Evaluated, Assessed, Diagnosed, Audited
  • Identified, Uncovered, Discovered, Detected
  • Strategized, Designed, Architected, Planned, Forecasted
  • Recommended, Advised, Consulted, Proposed

Technical & Engineering

  • Built, Developed, Engineered, Coded, Implemented
  • Deployed, Shipped, Released, Integrated, Migrated
  • Optimized, Refactored, Debugged, Automated, Scaled
  • Designed, Architected, Prototyped, Tested, Documented

Communication & Collaboration

  • Presented, Communicated, Articulated, Negotiated, Persuaded
  • Collaborated, Partnered, Liaised, Facilitated, Aligned
  • Authored, Wrote, Drafted, Published, Edited
Rule of thumb: every bullet point on your resume should start with a past-tense action verb. Never start with "Responsible for," "Worked on," or "Helped with."

Turning Weak Bullets into Strong Ones

  • Weak: "Responsible for social media accounts" → Strong: "Grew Instagram following from 2K to 28K in 6 months through daily content strategy"
  • Weak: "Helped with product launches" → Strong: "Coordinated cross-functional launches for 4 product releases, delivering all on time and under budget"
  • Weak: "Worked on improving the checkout flow" → Strong: "Redesigned checkout flow, reducing cart abandonment rate by 23%"
